The Red Carpet
Thank you for read this article, what follows is the result of great research put into excellent writing.
Most people think of celebrities "walking" the red carpet at movie premiers. While that is true today, it wasn't always the case for this type of rug. They used to be more functional and the process that took red carpets from being functional to fashionable is long and interesting.
The idea of putting a carpet out for important people to walk on probably started in medieval times. Because the roads were virtually non-existent, large puddles and pot holes were always present in the path of visiting dignitaries and royalty. A carpet would be put down on the ground so that these important people would not have to drag their expensive clothing through the mud, or worse materials, which might be in the streets. This is basically the same idea as someone putting their coat down for a princess to walk on.
These practices carried on until the roads were substantial enough to negate the need for such practices. However, with the invention of the passenger railroad, came the resurgence of the idea of placing a carpet for passengers riding the trains. The New York Central Railroad used to place a red carpet on the floor to direct passengers to their right compartments. It is believed that this was the start of placing a red carpet for important and famous people.
Now, the practice of "rolling out the red carpet" has come to mean several different things, besides using them for celebrities, royalty and other important people. This expression has come to mean any kind of treatment that is out of the ordinary. "Red carpet treatment" is what many different businesses claim to offer to their customers. It is a marketing ploy that many businesses use to increase the perceived value of their products.
Of course, because red colored carpets have come to be seen as expensive, many businesses that are trying to portray a rich appearance will put them on their floors. This makes them seem like they are luxurious businesses and so they can sometimes charge more for their products and services than a business that does not have that perceived expensive value. However, often times, a red carpet is looked down on more often than not, unless it is being used in an official "red carpet ceremony." But in special circumstances, these marketing plans work well.
Now you know a little more about a red carpet and how it came to be used. Since the beginning of roads, the idea of red carpets has always been in use. Now they are used only in special places, or as cheap marketing strategies, but in the past the use of the red carpet was a big deal. The morphing of these carpets over the years is a very interesting study.

Today's Tip On Carpet
The different types of Turkish carpets do have different characteristics. Wool on wool carpets, for example, tends to have a low knot count and non-intricate patterns, like geometric shapes, while wool on cotton has a higher knot count and more intricate patterns, including floral designs. Silk on silk rugs have the highest knot count and usually have very intricate patterns. In addition to materials used, you can determine whether the rug is hand-or machine-spun by looking at the back of it. If the squares are all the same size, then the rug has been machine-spun. You can also tell whether the dyes used are natural or the less expensive chemical versions by wiping a spot of the rug with a damp white cloth. If color bleeds off, then chemical dyes have been used. Keep in mind that bleeding off on the cloth also means they will bleed onto each other if the carpet is washed. |
